Creative FAQ

Here are a few questions about radio advertising, that we often get asked. If you don’t see your question answered here, contact us directly!

How do I get a radio ad made?
As a customer of The Radio Network, your ad is part of the package. We’ll work with you to develop the right commercials for your business. If you’re not a customer of The Radio Network, we can still help.  Contact us.

What makes a good radio ad?
Radio is entertainment - so a good radio ad should, first and foremost, be entertaining. Don’t worry, your message won't be lost if your ad is fun, creative, and likeable: in fact it's a lot more more likely to be remembered.

Should I voice my ad myself?
It worked for Michael Hill, but only because he was so bad.  It worked for Mad Butcher, but only because he was so likeable. Actually - who voices the ad isn't important.  It’s all about entertainment.  See “what makes a good radio ad.”

How many words can I put in my ad?

It's not how many words that makes an ad work, it's how you use words. Silence can be a very powerful tool. Sound effects and music can create images and moods. Speaking slowly and softly can stand out a lot more than shouting.

How long does it take for an ad to be made?

The turnaround time for a commercial depends on the work involved. A straight forward commercial with a simple voice and music track can be done very quickly indeed.  A jingle with music and singing will take a few weeks.

Although we can respond quickly when there’s an urgent message to deliver, you should usually try to book your commercials well ahead – to secure the days and times that’ll be best for your business.

Can I use my radio commercial on other radio stations?  Or on my website?

All creative produced by TRN is owned by TRN. We can release your ads to play on other media, but it is most likely to involve a fee. Contact us to find out more.

Can I use a recognised tune behind my ad?
In most cases, no. Sorry. Most published music is under copyright – regardless of whether you use the original recording, or your own version. You need to gain the composer, performer and publisher's consent, and pay all appropriate royalties. We’re happy to find out the costs and seek appropriate permissions if you are interested. Otherwise, we can source royalty-free music from our very extensive library.

Should I run branding ads, or an offer?

Both work well on radio. Branding campaigns on radio are one of the most cost-effective ways to make a business or product famous. And a good offer can get an immediate response. (Imagine if a service station advertised petrol for .50c a litre on the radio!)  But to work, the offer needs to be compelling.

Can I use a siren at the start to attract attention?

Radio ads work by frequency, so a good ad doesn't need an 'attention getter' to work. Your campaign will work better - and your brand will be more appealing - if your ads are likeable. If you make your ads annoying, they’ll turn customers away. And people won’t tell you they’re annoyed …they just won’t show up at your door. Ever.

Do I need a jingle?

Maybe you do. Jingles are a powerful tool on radio - they can create emotional appeal and improve recall, and we’ve got scientific data to prove it. Jingles do carry a price tag, so we suggest talking to us first about whether a jingle will be right for your business.

Can I put my phone number in the ad?

As a general rule, people don’t note down the phone numbers in ads. They remember the business name, and Google it. If your business relies on people remembering the number (e.g. pizza delivery or taxi company) – make the whole ad about the phone number!
